Chicago Med is finally here. The medical drama has been off the air for six months due to the writers and actors strike, and we could not be more excited. There were lots of changes that happened to the Gaffney Medical staff in season 8, so we’re prepared for a show that looks a little bit different than we remembered.
The synopsis for the season 9 premiere, titled “Row Row Row Your Boat on a Rocky Sea”, makes it clear that change is in the air:

Med is clearly putting its best foot forward, as each of the individual subplots in the premiere would be enough to power a standard episode. Dean Archer (Steven Weber) has been through quite a bit in the last few seasons, especially when considering his connection with Hannah Asher (Jessy Schram). The character has been reluctant to undergo a kidney transplant, despite the fact that his health is getting worse with each passing week. It’s also worth noting that the season 9 premiere will pick up a whopping six months after the events of the season 8 finale, so Archer’s condition is going to be much worse than when we last saw him.The other big storyline to consider is the introduction of Dr. Mitch Ripley (Luke Mitchell). He will be stepping into the shoes previously filled by Will Halstead (Nick Gehlfuss), and will have to not only win over the audience, but the other members of the medical staff as well.
Based on the promos and the synopsis, Ripley is worried that his pre-existing relationship with Daniel Charles (Oliver Platt) is going to compromise his ability to be taken seriously at the hospital. There’s a little bit of hostility between the two men, though the promo makes it clear that it’s one-sided (a side that belongs to Ripley).
We can’t wait to see how these various drama play out against the backdrop of a local flood!
